Nokia has illustrated the potential of drones in enhancing rescue missions for emergency responders. By utilizing its Ultra Compact Network—a highly mobile base station—Nokia has successfully demonstrated the establishment of an immediate high-speed LTE network, enabling seamless communication between drones equipped with cameras and a command center. This exhibition was part of the “Nokia Saves Lives” initiative, showcased at the UAE Drones for Good (D4G) Award event in Dubai.

In emergency situations, ensuring network connectivity is paramount, as it is frequently disrupted.Nokia’s Ultra Compact Network offers a standalone LTE solution that swiftly restores connectivity for critical applications, including video-enabled drones. These drones can transmit live video and sensor data from the disaster site back to the command center, providing vital information such as the precise locations of individuals in distress and the challenges faced in reaching them.

the Nokia Saves Lives initiative sets up a command center in affected areas, utilizing Nokia Video Analytics technology to process data and generate actionable insights. This facilitates rapid decision-making, allowing responders to prioritize tasks for effective and safe rescue operations. The combination of Nokia’s Video and Data Analytics solutions, along with rescue applications and mission advisory tools, equips teams with the intelligence needed for prompt and informed decision-making.

Recently, Nokia joined the GSMA Humanitarian Connectivity Charter, which focuses on enhancing communication access for individuals impacted by crises, ultimately aiming to minimize loss of life and improve humanitarian responses. Nokia is committed to this collaboration, partnering with operators and NGOs to support rescue efforts, offering a limited number of its Nokia Saves lives initiative on a not-for-profit basis. This initiative is currently being piloted with various operators and NGOs and is set to be featured at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2017.

Bernard Najm, head of NokiaS Middle east Market Unit, stated: “Nokia is dedicated to expanding the capabilities of technology for the greater good. Through the ‘Nokia Saves Lives’ initiative, we aim to leverage our drone technology to enhance rescue operations in partnership with NGOs and network operators. The recognition of this initiative by the UAE Drones for Good Award for a public demonstration in Dubai underscores its meaning in smart disaster recovery.”
