Innovative Communication Solutions for the U.S. Army
Persistent Systems has secured a meaningful contract with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command C5ISR Center. The objective is to create a robust and secure high-throughput communication network tailored for Army Manned-Unmanned Teams (MUM-T). This initiative will integrate a cutting-edge Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) with up to four unmanned Remote Combat Vehicles (RCVs).
Advanced Networking Technology
To facilitate seamless communication between the RCVs, their sensors, and the OMFV, Persistent’s MPU5 smart radio has been selected, utilizing its Wave Relay MANET (mobile Ad Hoc Networking) technology. This technology has already been endorsed by the Next Generation Combat Vehicle cross-functional team (NGCV-CFT) and the Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) as the preferred MANET network for RCV Phase 1, following extensive evaluation by the U.S. Army over the past year.
Enhanced Features of the MPU5 Smart Radio
The MPU5 is being customized by Persistent in collaboration with the C5ISR Center’s Space and Terrestrial Communications Directorate to fulfill the stringent anti-jamming and cyber resilience requirements essential for MUM-T operations. this radio establishes a highly scalable, peer-to-peer network that operates independently of external communication infrastructures, avoiding reliance on potentially vulnerable central nodes. Key features of the MPU5 smart radio include:
- An integrated Android-based computer that supports command-and-control and situational awareness applications
- A 3×3 MIMO configuration capable of transmitting up to 10 watts, achieving a throughput exceeding 100 Mbps
- A built-in HD video Encoder/Decoder that allows for the distribution of multiple real-time HD video feeds to team members as needed
strategic Insights from Persistent Systems
Brian Soles, Vice President of Business Development at Persistent, stated, “The Army is seeking RCVs that can be operated remotely in groups over extensive distances, across various terrains including urban areas, forests, and open fields. Thes manned-unmanned teams must also be equipped to counteract threats from enemy hacking and jamming.”
He further emphasized, “The advancements achieved through this contract will extend beyond vehicles. Our goal is to equip dismounted soldiers with these hardened capabilities, significantly enhancing our operational effectiveness against more advanced adversaries.”
