Sarcos Robotics develops advanced mobile robots, including the Guardian® S, designed for remote visual inspection (RVI) in challenging environments.

In a case study released by HZO the company explores how HZO’s Parylene coatings helped protect the Guardian S against harsh conditions, ensuring reliable operation during mission-critical tasks.

The Guardian S robot needed to withstand exposure to liquids and corrosive elements in unpredictable industrial settings. Sarcos required a lightweight, durable protection solution to complement the robot’s compact design.

Challenges

Protecting Mission-Critical Robots with Advanced CoatingsThe Guardian S robot faced the challenge of operating in environments with liquid exposure over 2 inches deep, including rain, oil, and saltwater.

Traditional mechanical seals were considered unreliable and too bulky for the robot’s compact, agile design. Sarcos needed a protective solution that maintained the robot’s slim form while ensuring durability in rugged conditions.

The HZO Conformal Coating Solution:

  • Parylene Coatings: Provide thin, lightweight protection without compromising performance.
  • IP65 Ingress Protection: Critical to ensure the robot’s resilience in harsh conditions such as oil, saltwater, and cleaning fluids.

The Design Process

Sarcos sought a reliable alternative to mechanical seals and contacted HZO after receiving a referral. The design process included:

  • Detailed schematics provided by Sarcos, outlining masking points to ensure precision in coating application.
  • HZO’s Coating-as-a-Service: Allowed Sarcos to benefit from HZO’s expertise while keeping production streamlined and efficient.
  • HZO’s engineers developed a tailored coating solution, addressing Sarcos’ complexity, process design, and production needs.

HZO Parylene Coatings provided effective protection for the Guardian S’s electronics, allowing the robot to reliably operate in water up to 2 inches deep. The coating process employed advanced masking automation and optimized coating chambers, enabling scalable application. Sarcos also leveraged HZO’s Coating-as-a-Service model, which ensured both precision and quality while integrating seamlessly into their production line.
