Edge Autonomy has unveiled advanced iterations of its portable pneumatic catapult systems designed for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).These catapults come in two rail lengths—4 meters adn 6 meters—boasting significantly enhanced launch energies of up to 11 kJ and 16 kJ,respectively.
The newly designed 4-meter catapult exhibits an impressive 85% increase in power compared to its predecessor, while the 6-meter variant has experienced a 35% boost in energy output. This surge in performance is attributed to a thorough overhaul of the pneumatic system, which now achieves pressures of up to 16 bars. This upgraded system allows for the launch of UAVs weighing as much as 60 kg, reaching speeds of up to 26 m/s.
The Portable Pneumatic Catapult system is equipped with robust catapult rails featuring an aircraft carriage, an electrically-driven air compressor complete with a tank, and a elegant electronic control station to enhance safety measures. The entire setup is conveniently housed in rugged, standard-sized transport cases, enabling deployment by a single technician in under 30 minutes. The standard carriage is compatible with Edge Autonomy’s Penguin C Mk1 and Mk2 UAS platforms, and the company also provides customization options for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Edge Autonomy’s pneumatic catapult design emphasizes reliability, efficiency, and precision, ensuring dependable launches across a diverse range of environmental conditions.Additionally, a specialized “Desert” option is available, offering enhanced protection against dust and sand while broadening the operational temperature range of the catapult.
