Electric VTOL UAV for Atmospheric Flow Measurement

Innovative Use of VTOL uavs in Atmospheric Research

The Skyeye Sierra,a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAV developed by Elevonx, has been specifically modified to accommodate sensors for atmospheric flow measurement. This adaptation is part of a collaborative effort with the environmental Physics department at the University of Tübingen.

Tailored Solutions for Environmental Research

The SkyEye Sierra UAV is designed for easy customization, making it an excellent fit for the specific requirements of the Environmental Physics team at Tübingen university, led by Prof. Dr. Jens Bange.

Advancements in Atmospheric Science

For several years, Prof. dr. Jens Bange and his research team have been utilizing remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to explore atmospheric phenomena. Their work focuses on understanding atmospheric flows and examining the turbulent exchange and transport processes within the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). This research encompasses the monitoring of various fluxes, including momentum, heat, water vapor, CO2, and aerosols. In addition to foundational research, the team applies their findings to multiple projects related to wind energy, both offshore and in challenging terrains.
