Revolutionary Sonar-Equipped USVs Take Center Stage on the River Thames

Hydronalix has recently conducted training sessions and demonstrations featuring its Sonar EMILY unmanned surface vehicle (USV) for various civil safety organizations along the River Thames in London, UK. This compact USV employs both side-scan and downward-facing sonar technology too capture high-resolution images, aiding in the search for drowning victims, submerged vehicles, and sunken boats.

The Hydronalix team collaborated with the London Fire Brigade, operating from the Lambeth Fire Pontoon. The demonstrations showcased a range of activities, including riverbed surveys, inspections of embankments and bridges, as well as search and rescue (SAR) operations. Real-time imagery was transmitted to observers via payload stations, enhancing situational awareness.

Numerous key agencies participated in the event, including:

  • London Fire Brigade’s Head of technical Rescue, Fire Boat station Commander, and operational crews
  • Port of London Authority, who arrived by boat
  • Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) crew members, who also attended by boat
  • Metropolitan Police river crew, present by boat
  • A representative from Surrey County Council, part of the Bridge Owners Coordination Group for the River Thames

Attendees had the chance to interact with Hydronalix’s Beach EMILY variant, experiencing the USV’s operation firsthand under the challenging conditions of a strong spring tide.

additionally, the event featured the innovative low-cost disposable ADAPT Drone, specifically designed for humanitarian and rescue missions. This drone can transport up to 5 pounds over a distance of 3 kilometers and operates without the need for a skilled pilot or ground station, as missions can be programmed using smartphones or tablets.

The demonstrations sparked meaningful interest in the bridge surveying capabilities of Sonar EMILY, and also its effectiveness in SAR operations. Follow-up meetings, presentations, and further demonstrations have already been scheduled to provide tailored experiences for users.
