Advancements in UAS Technology: Schiebel’s Latest Trial

In a significant collaboration with MDA Space,a leader in robotics technology,Schiebel has successfully showcased the capabilities of IMSAR’s NSP Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) integrated with Ground and Maritime Moving Target Indication (GMTI and MMTI) on the CAMCOPTER S-100 Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). This achievement was marked by a week-long rigorous testing phase at the Foremost UAS Test Range located in Western Canada.

Seamless Integration and Enhanced Functionality

The integration of the IMSAR NSP radar system into the CAMCOPTER S-100 was accomplished ahead of the projected timeline, with all necessary radar electronics efficiently contained within the antenna pod. The advanced software associated with the radar facilitates straightforward mission planning, allowing operators to upload flight plans directly to the S-100 platform.

Demonstrating Versatility in Diverse conditions

Throughout the testing period, the fully integrated system exhibited it’s exceptional capabilities during both daytime and nighttime operations, achieving ranges that surpassed 100 nautical miles. The S-100, outfitted with the IMSAR NSP radar, Wescam’s MX-8 electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor, a GPS anti-jamming system, and an Automatic Identification System (AIS), successfully executed a variety of simulated land and maritime missions.

High-Resolution Imaging and Operational Effectiveness

The system delivered high-resolution SAR imagery alongside Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI) detections and tracking, all while proving its adaptability in challenging weather scenarios. This performance underscores the IMSAR radar’s role as a vital sensor, substantially enhancing the platform’s operational capabilities and situational awareness in complex environments.

Expert Insights on Enhanced Surveillance Capabilities

Neil Hunter, the Head of Global Sales at Schiebel, remarked: “The combination of IMSAR’s radar with the S-100, paired with a robust EO/IR sensor, greatly amplifies the platform’s surveillance and detection abilities, enabling extensive coverage at remarkable distances under all weather conditions. This trial reinforces the ongoing operational effectiveness of the CAMCOPTER S-100 as a multi-sensor platform, capable of providing actionable intelligence in real-time, both day and night.”
