Revolutionizing Connectivity: The SWaP-Optimized Embedded Services Router for Cisco IOS-XE Software

Extreme Engineering Solutions’ new XChange6300 ESR is a conduction-cooled XMC/PMC router card that can plug into existing sockets or be used in standalone applications

Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES) has unveiled its latest innovation, the Embedded services Router (ESR),which is engineered to be the most durable option available for Cisco IOS-XE networking and interaction needs.

The XChange6300 ESR is a conduction-cooled XMC/PMC router card that can seamlessly integrate into existing sockets or function independently in various applications.

Building on the foundation of its predecessor, the XPedite5205 ESR, X-ES has introduced a revamped design aimed at enhancing longevity, alongside the XChange6300 growth platform and robust, deployable router systems.

Utilizing Cisco’s cutting-edge Mobile Ready Net technology, the XChange6300 ensures secure transmission of data, voice, and video across both stationary and mobile network nodes via wired and wireless connections. This technology can be combined with UHF, VHF, Wi-Fi, and other radio systems to establish Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) without relying on centralized infrastructure, making it particularly useful for military and emergency response scenarios.

The XChange6300 expands Cisco’s enterprise capabilities beyond conventional fixed-network limitations, making it suitable for sectors such as military and aerospace, oil and gas, mining, smart grid, heavy construction, transportation, homeland security, and public safety.

Unmatched Ruggedness in ESR Design

The XChange6300 stands out among embedded services routers due to its advanced ruggedization features:

  • Support for leaded solder assembly, a proven method to mitigate tin whiskers that can lead to severe electronic failures.
  • It undergoes stringent testing and qualification processes that X-ES customers expect, ensuring reliable routing functionality even in the most challenging environments.
  • X-ES offers Configuration Management Control, providing alerts and assessments when components are nearing obsolescence, which is crucial for customers with extended product lifecycles.
  • Engineers at X-ES can provide tailored configuration options, including parylene conformal coating for enhanced protection.

Seamless Integration with X-ES Embedded Switches & Efficient Rugged Systems

The XChange6300 is built on established industry standards, allowing it to integrate effortlessly with X-ES’s range of 40 Gigabit, 10 Gigabit, and Gigabit Ethernet embedded switches. This compatibility enhances performance while significantly reducing the need for costly and time-consuming customizations.

This new ESR employs a next-generation bare-metal architecture to optimize Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP). Unlike other routers that rely on power-hungry virtual environments, the XChange6300 is designed to consume minimal power, facilitating a mezzanine implementation. When combined with X-ES’s embedded switches, it can be mounted on custom sky-lined heatframes to further enhance SWaP efficiency.

The XChange6300 ESR is also compatible with the XPand6240 commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) rugged system, which is based on the Intel Xeon D-1700 series processors. Its compact design maximizes processing and networking capabilities while offering a SWaP-optimized alternative to larger slot-based systems, representing a true Small Form Factor (SFF) system utilizing COTS 3U VPX modules.

Streamlined Transition with Minimal Retraining

To cater to the requirements of demanding mobile and embedded networking applications, the XChange6300 ESR includes the following features:

  • Onboard hardware encryption to alleviate encryption processing demands
  • Radio Aware Routing (RAR) with support for the latest Dynamic Link Exchange Protocol (DLEP)
  • Full IPv6 compatibility
  • Integrated threat management with Cisco IOS-XE firewalls and Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)
  • Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities

Since the XChange6300 ESR operates on the same Cisco IOS-XE platform that military, energy, public safety, and other sectors are already familiar with, organizations can extend their networks to personnel, equipment, facilities, and vehicles at the network’s edge—ranging from soldiers in combat zones to operations in mines and drilling sites, as well as mobile command centers during natural disasters—without necessitating additional training.
