Revolutionizing Fishing: How Acoustic Trigger Technology Supports Sustainable Ropeless and On-Demand Practices

The integration of Teledyne's industry-standard acoustic modem technology and the new Acoustic Trigger feature could revolutionize the lobster and crab fishing industries

Innovative Acoustic Trigger Technology Enhances Sustainable Fishing Practices

Revolutionizing Sustainable Fishing with Acoustic Trigger Technology

Teledyne Benthos has joined forces with the Sea Mammal Education Learning Technology Society (SMELTS) to introduce a groundbreaking solution aimed at promoting sustainable ropeless lobster fishing.

This collaboration combines Teledyne’s renowned acoustic modem technology with SMELTS’ innovative ropeless lobster traps, setting the stage for a transformative shift in the lobster and crab fishing sectors.

By harnessing Teledyne’s established acoustic technology alongside SMELTS’ expertise, the partnership is excited to unveil the Acoustic Trigger feature, designed to enhance safety and efficiency in fishing operations.

Following extensive sea trials over recent years, this technology has demonstrated its potential to significantly benefit the lobster and crab fishing industries.

Enhancing Underwater Communication

Teledyne Benthos, a leader in underwater communication solutions, is proud to present the Acoustic Trigger feature, which amplifies the functionality of its acoustic modems. This enhancement allows for seamless integration with various external devices.

By utilizing the robust capabilities of Benthos technology, users can expect reliable and high-performance subsea wireless control, bolstered by the redundant security features inherent in Teledyne Benthos modems.

Operational Mechanism of the Acoustic Trigger

  • The Acoustic Trigger function is included in Teledyne Benthos modem firmware version 8.15 and later.
  • Upon receiving a verified acoustic signal, the “trigger” activates an output, which can be deactivated based on user-defined conditions stored in the modem’s configuration database.
  • this output can control a valve, motor, burn-wire, or any custom device specified by the user.
  • Users can configure timing settings within the modem or specify them directly from the surface, referred to as the “override time.”
  • The trigger signal can be terminated thru various methods, including timer expiration, binary input from external devices, or the modem’s built-in “tilt” feature.

Applications of the acoustic Initiator Device

The Acoustic Initiator Device supports a wide range of applications, with three notable implementations highlighted in a detailed case study:

  • Mine Countermeasures: Initiates detonation commands for safe mine disposal.
  • On-Demand Fishing: Activates the inflation of a lift bag or the release of a buoy linked to a subsea fishing trap.
  • Wireless Device Control: Facilitates wireless operation of external devices such as lights, sensors, or cameras through acoustic trigger commands.

Expert Insights

Bob Melvin, Chief Engineer at Teledyne Benthos, remarked, “Since 2018, our collaboration with SMELTS has focused on integrating the Acoustic initiator Device into the LobsterRaft™. Feedback from fishermen has been crucial in developing a reliable and user-friendly system, making ropeless or on-demand fishing a practical alternative to conventional surface buoys.”

“The Acoustic Initiator Device represents a meaningful leap forward in subsea technology, providing an essential tool for wireless asset management.”
