This case study draws inspiration from an article by RCV Engines, showcasing the integration of their DF70LC multi-fuel engine into a cutting-edge long-range unmanned helicopter developed by Sentinel Unmanned.

The sentinel Longreach 70 UAV – Engineered by RCV

Sentinel Unmanned embarked on an ambitious project to create a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) that would set new standards in innovation adn performance. The design criteria emphasized the need for a compact,long-range system capable of utilizing heavy fuel and featuring rotary-wing capabilities for stable hovering. Additionally, the platform was required to support a significant payload.

Several other critical elements were also included in the design brief:

  • Ability to start remotely using heavy fuel
  • Onboard power generation to accommodate a variety of sensors and equipment
  • Versatility for operation in diverse environments, including challenging climates and marine settings

Crafting the Solution

From the outset, Sentinel collaborated closely with the RCV team to thoroughly grasp the project requirements and establish a specification that would meet the ambitious design objectives.

The propulsion system chosen for this innovative platform was the RCV 70cc twin-cylinder liquid-cooled engine (DF70LC).This compact unit boasts an impressive power-to-weight ratio, a liquid cooling mechanism, and the capability to operate on heavy fuels (JP5/JP8) and also gasoline.

the airframe was meticulously designed in partnership with RCV to ensure seamless engine integration.

Outcomes and Added Advantages

The integration of the DF70LC engine into the Longreach unmanned helicopter conferred several significant benefits:

  • The patented rotary valve system ensures optimal mixture readiness, allowing for the use of heavy fuel without any discernible loss in power
  • Proven remote starting capabilities with multiple fuel options, including heavy fuels (JP5/JP8/Jet A1, etc.)
  • Extended mean time between overhauls (MTBO) of up to 150 hours for rotary-wing applications
  • Reliable starting across all specified fuels and conditions, thanks to built-in heaters, a centrally positioned spark plug, and an efficient combustion system
  • Remarkable starting performance in various ambient conditions and altitudes

A member of the sentinel Unmanned team remarked, “The Longreach platform has emerged as one of the top sUAS available today. This achievement would not have been possible without the RCV engine. We have successfully met and exceeded all aspects of the original design brief.”

“Our partnership with RCV has been crucial to the project’s success. Having utilized the RCV engine, we would confidently recommend it for other platforms.”
