Enhancing Maritime Training Through AI Collaboration

Robosys Automation has joined forces with AMC Search (AMCS) to leverage their combined expertise in providing mariners with cutting-edge technology, training, and protocols for integrating human and artificial intelligence in maritime operations.

Launching a New Era of Training

The partnership comes in response to the growing interest in Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) and their trials in both crewed and uncrewed settings. To kick off this collaboration, Robosys and AMCS will host a training session at Ocean Business 2023, titled “Understanding Human and AI Collaboration for future Shipping.”

This event is scheduled to take place in Southampton from April 18-20, were Robosys will lead a classroom training session that includes a case study showcasing AMCS’s use of Robosys’ VOYAGER AI software at its Maritime Simulation Center in Tasmania.

Case Study Insights

The case study revolves around four distinct scenarios designed to analyze the interactions between humans and machines, adhering to the International Maritime Association’s (IMO) Convention on International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS).

These scenarios were tested both in isolation and within a mixed human-machine environment, simulating various challenging maritime conditions.

Importance of Simulation in Training

The training session at Ocean Business will emphasize the critical role of simulations in developing the necessary skills for operating MASS systems. Participants will witness firsthand how AI responds to different navigation challenges, including a direct comparison of human and AI reactions in identical situations.

Why Robosys’ Voyager AI?

AMCS chose Robosys’ Voyager AI software for its training programs in Tasmania due to its user-friendly and adaptable mission settings, suitable for both crewed and uncrewed vessels. The software also features ‘Explainable AI’ that ensures compliance with COLREGS,aiding both autonomous and crewed ships with its Collision Avoidance Decision Aid (CADA) functionality.

Expert Insights

Nick Bonser,a Simulation & Autonomous Maritime Instructor at AMC Search, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating,“We are thrilled to collaborate with Robosys Automation, given their extensive knowledge in this field. Their agility and expertise will enhance our simulator operations and training syllabus for MASS operators, including the CADA capabilities for our students.”

Nigel lee, Chief Strategy Officer at Robosys Automation, shared his excitement about the upcoming training at Ocean Business 2023, looking forward to a long-term partnership that aims to improve safety and efficiency in sustainable maritime operations.

Future Collaborations

Both Robosys Automation and AMCS are in the process of finalizing a three-year partnership agreement aimed at enhancing MASS-certified training. They will also present at the inaugural international Conference on Maritime Autonomy and Remote Navigation (ICMAR Nav) in Launceston, australia, from november 27-30, 2023, focusing on the theme “Driving Forward Autonomy in the Maritime Industry.”
