Textron Systems Secures $20.8 Million Contract for Advanced Mine Sweeping technology
Textron Systems has received a critically important contract worth $20.8 million to spearhead the design, development, and integration of a cutting-edge mine sweeping system for the U.S. Navy, intended for deployment on the Common Unmanned Surface Vessel (CUSV) platform.
Introducing MAGNUSS: The Future of Mine Sweeping
This innovative system, known as the Magnetic and Acoustic Generation Next Unmanned Superconducting Sweep (MAGNUSS), is part of the Navy’s initiative to transition from outdated towed mine-sweeping technologies, as supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
collaborative Efforts for Enhanced Capabilities
As the lead contractor, Textron Systems will collaborate with General Dynamics – Applied Physical Sciences Corporation and American Superconductor to advance the development of this next-generation capability for the ONR.
Revolutionizing Mine Sweeping Operations
MAGNUSS will leverage a powerful magnet engineered by American Superconductor alongside an underwater acoustic system created by General Dynamics – Applied Physical sciences Corporation. This design aims to conduct mine-sweeping operations swiftly and effectively, eliminating the need for conventional towed systems. By integrating the payload directly onto the CUSV platform, the system enhances safety and efficiency, significantly reducing risks to personnel.
Commitment to Safety and Innovation
Ryan Schaffernocker, Vice President of Sea Systems at Textron, expressed enthusiasm about the contract, stating, “Following our notable achievements in 2022, including the Initial Operational Capability for the Unmanned Influence Sweep System (UISS) and our support for the Mine Counter Measure Mission Package Initial Operational Test & Evaluation (IOT&E), this award underscores the Navy’s ongoing confidence in the Textron Systems USV team to innovate and prepare next-generation technologies for deployment. We are dedicated to ensuring the safety of our sailors as they fulfill their mission to protect our nation.”
Looking Ahead: Continued Development and Testing
this contract, spanning 36 months, will facilitate ongoing testing and further advancements in this groundbreaking technology, reinforcing the Navy’s commitment to modernizing its mine-sweeping capabilities.
