Innovative Autopilot System for Floating Solar Technology

Dynautics has partnered with noria to tailor an advanced autopilot and control system for the AquaPhi prototype.

transforming Floating Solar Arrays

AquaPhi is a groundbreaking autonomous positioning system designed for dynamic solar tracking. By utilizing thrusters located beneath the solar array, it transforms conventional static floating solar installations into agile platforms. Current floating solar projects frequently enough rely on fixed anchors, which limit their ability to adjust orientation and, consequently, their energy output.

Precision Control for Enhanced energy Production

The control system developed by Dynautics meticulously manages the power distribution to each motor on the 10m-by-10m floating array. It also directs the thrust from eight thrusters to effectively counteract the effects of wind and water currents.

With the implementation of specialized coding by the Dynautics team, the solar array can be programmed to maintain a stationary position while rotating around its vertical axis to follow the sun. This capability can lead to an increase in energy production by as much as 20% annually, while also facilitating easier repositioning of the array on the water.

Advantages of Floating Solar Technology

Floating solar technology offers numerous advantages, particularly in regions where land is at a premium. By utilizing expansive water bodies such as lakes and reservoirs, this innovative approach avoids the need to occupy valuable land space. Research has indicated that floating solar installations can also enhance water quality and retention, substantially reducing evaporation and the occurrence of harmful algae blooms.

Noria Energy: A Leader in Floating Solar Solutions

based in California, Noria Energy is at the forefront of developing sustainable energy systems that deliver long-term benefits. Among their notable accomplishments is the establishment of the largest floating solar photovoltaic system in the United States, located in Healdsburg, California, completed in 2022.Additionally, they have developed the largest floating solar system on a hydroelectric reservoir in the western hemisphere, situated in Urra, Colombia.

Collaboration and Future Developments

Dynautics began its collaboration with Noria in the summer of 2023, focusing on the initial prototype of AquaPhi.

Jimmy Raiford, Noria Energy’s Head of Technology Development, remarked: “Dynautics brought the necesary expertise and a commitment to creating a tailored solution for our floating solar tracker. Their team was highly responsive and collaborative, enabling us to meet tight deadlines and resolve challenges associated with this innovative request of their control technology. The outcome is a product that will enhance energy output and provide greater value to our clients.

Noria Energy is dedicated to further developing AquaPhi for commercial applications and is eager to maintain its partnership with Dynautics. The optimized control logic of the Dynautics autopilot solution will allow Noria to integrate additional thrusters in future projects, accommodating larger floating solar installations.
