Schiebel, in collaboration with Hanwha Systems adn UI Helicopter, has secured a significant contract from the Defence Acquisition Program Management (DAPA) of South Korea. this agreement focuses on the creation and provision of the CAMCOPTER® S-300, a Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Air System (UAS) intended for the South Korean Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The contract, finalized with Hanwha Systems, aims to deliver the S-300 for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions, specifically for the South Korean Navy and Marine Corps.

Expanding Capabilities in Response to Evolving Threats

For over a decade, the south Korean Navy has relied on Schiebel’s technology, utilizing the CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS for maritime ISR operations. Given the shifting geopolitical landscape and the persistent threat from North Korea, there is a pressing need to enhance their UAS capabilities by integrating larger and more advanced systems.

Technical Specifications and Versatility of the S-300

The S-300 is designed to meet STANAG compliance and is fully certifiable, boasting an notable endurance of up to 24 hours and the ability to operate at altitudes reaching 21,000 feet. This capability allows for sustained loitering during ISTAR missions. With a payload capacity of up to 250 kg, the S-300 is well-suited for long-distance cargo delivery, even in challenging and elevated terrains. Its adaptability also enables it to deploy various payloads, including multiple sonar buoys for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations.

To maximize mission flexibility and cost efficiency, the S-300 can be operated using the same Ground Control Station that supports the CAMCOPTER® S-100. Schiebel’s thorough ‘system of systems’ strategy guarantees the long-term interoperability of its unmanned fleet,drawing on over 20 years of experience in developing a reliable VTOL core system.

Global Expansion and Future Prospects

Recently, Schiebel announced the expansion of its facility in Abu Dhabi, significantly enhancing its global presence for the CAMCOPTER S-300. The platform’s open architecture is designed to accommodate the sovereignty and offset requirements of various nations, ensuring its adaptability in diverse operational contexts.
