Shaping the Future: Establishing European Standards for UAS Traffic Management

Aerobits has entered into a partnership with Droniq to develop European standards for solutions that are required for the management of

Innovative Collaboration to Establish UAS Traffic Management Standards in Europe

Aerobits has forged a strategic alliance wiht Droniq to pioneer European standards essential for the oversight of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) traffic. At present, there exists a significant gap in technical standards for unmanned traffic management (UTM) and tracking at both national and European levels.

Leveraging Advanced Technology for Enhanced Air Traffic Management

This initiative will leverage Aerobits’ innovative hook-on-Device (HOD), a specialized LTE modem designed to seamlessly attach to drones. This device continuously transmits the drone’s location via the Deutsche Telekom cellular network to a UTM system developed by Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS).

Enhanced Communication with ADS-B and FLARM integration

The latest version of the Aerobits HOD is equipped to receive ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast) signals and features a FLARM transceiver. This allows it to relay positional details to other airspace users equipped with FLARM receivers, including manned aircraft and helicopters. ADS-B technology is widely utilized by various aircraft operating in uncontrolled airspace, enabling drone operators to maintain a extensive awareness of all nearby air traffic. Manned aircraft utilizing FLARM can receive cockpit alerts when approaching a UAS equipped with the HOD, even if that drone is not connected to the UTM system.

Future Developments and Miniaturization Efforts

As part of this collaboration, the HOD will undergo further enhancements to develop new variants. These will include models with dedicated enclosures and OEM versions that can be directly integrated into aircraft. A critical focus of this project is the miniaturization of avionics, making it feasible to install these systems on a diverse range of drones, which is vital for the prosperous integration of UAS into the airspace.
