Silicon Sensing Systems: Celebrating 25 Years of Innovation

In 2024,Silicon Sensing Systems Ltd marks a significant milestone, celebrating 25 years of operation wiht an extraordinary sales increase of over 65% since 2019. This joint venture, formed between Sumitomo Precision Products and Collins Aerospace, previously celebrated its 20th anniversary just five years ago.

New Vision for MEMS Inertial Technology

The company has embarked on a new mission: to transform the landscape of MEMS inertial technology.

Throughout its quarter-century journey, Silicon Sensing has experienced a steady rise in demand for its durable and high-performance inertial sensing solutions. The firm has contributed its advanced inertial sensors and systems to a variety of groundbreaking projects, including the revolutionary Segway personal transporter and the Mayflower Autonomous Ship, which successfully navigated the Atlantic Ocean autonomously in June 2022.

Expanding Horizons in Motion Sensing

As the necessity for accurate motion sensing data has surged across diverse sectors—such as surveying, mapping, and marine applications—interest in Silicon Sensing’s technology has grown substantially.

The company’s proprietary micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology caters to a wide array of inertial needs, ranging from individual silicon vibrating ring sensors to comprehensive 6-axis inertial measurement units (IMUs).

Introducing the DMU41: A Game Changer

The latest addition to their product line, the DMU41, redefines the potential of MEMS technology, delivering high-performance sensing capabilities in a compact and cost-effective design. This robust unit has demonstrated exceptional reliability, functioning seamlessly in temperatures from -40°C to +85°C, thereby setting a new benchmark for durability and versatility in the marine sector.

Insights from Leadership

David Sommerville, General Manager of Silicon Sensing Systems, stated, “Our sensors and systems are now utilized in an exceptional variety of positioning, stabilization, and navigation applications, spanning environments from underwater to outer space.”

“In the marine industry, we have seen heightened interest as our rugged, compact, solid-state technology is ideally suited for harsh conditions. Our products are integral to numerous attitude and heading reference systems (AHRS) used for seabed mapping and tracking surface vessels.”

“Our latest offerings are achieving tactical-grade performance levels that surpass the typical expectations for MEMS technology. However, our forthcoming generation of products, set to launch in the next two to three years, will truly revolutionize MEMS inertial technology.”

“For the first time, Silicon Sensing aims to provide the market with navigation-level inertial sensing performance in a compact, robust, and cost-effective MEMS package.”
