SKYTRAC Systems Partners with The Exploration Company for Innovative Space Dialog
SKYTRAC Systems has announced that its Iridium Certus midband satellite communication (SATCOM) terminal has been chosen by The exploration Company for integration into its Nyx orbital vehicle. This advanced SATCOM terminal will facilitate data transmission from the spacecraft back to Earth.
Introducing the Nyx Orbital Vehicle
The Nyx vehicle is designed to be modular, reusable, and capable of in-orbit refueling, making it suitable for transporting cargo and, in the future, possibly human passengers. It is engineered for extended missions, allowing it to orbit the Earth for periods ranging from three to six months and to land on the Moon with re-entry capabilities. A smaller-scale re-entry demonstrator of Nyx is set to be launched aboard the inaugural flight of the Ariane 6 rocket later this year.Once in orbit, the capsule will separate and initiate its re-entry sequence back to Earth.
Advanced Communication Technology
The Exploration Company has opted for SKYTRAC’s DLS-100 data link transceivers to be installed on this demonstrator capsule. This technology supports real-time command and control, telemetry streaming, and the transmission of photos and videos, achieving uplink speeds of 22 Kbps via the Iridium NEXT satellite network.
Optimized for Space Applications
Weighing in at just 26.2 ounces (742.8 grams),the ruggedized DLS-100 is designed with Size,Weight, and Power (SWaP) considerations in mind, making it an ideal choice for various platforms, including space capsules. as this capsule serves as a non-recoverable technology demonstrator,it will transmit data before ultimately impacting the ocean.
Expert Insights on the Mission
Thomas Nussmann, Lead Avionics and Power at The Exploration Company, remarked: “From an altitude of 360 miles, the capsule will gather extensive data from its systems and sensors, which will be relayed to the ground via the Iridium satellite network using SKYTRAC’s DLS-100. This robust data link will ensure the low latency and reliable global satellite connectivity necessary for the success of this exhibition.”
Looking Ahead: A New Era in Space Exploration
Jeff Sherwood,Director of Business Growth at SKYTRAC,expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are thrilled to contribute to The Exploration Company’s mission to make space exploration more accessible with their groundbreaking Nyx capsule. Our DLS-100 technology is proud to extend its capabilities beyond conventional aviation, providing essential global connectivity for space-based initiatives.”
