Introducing the Portable Micro-Ranger 2 USBL System
Sonardyne has unveiled a compact version of its micro-Ranger 2 Ultra-Short BaseLine (USBL) system, designed for shallow-water applications. This all-in-one solution is tailored for tracking underwater assets, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
Thorough Tracking Capabilities
This innovative USBL system can monitor up to 10 targets at distances of up to 995 meters. The package features a Micro-Ranger Transceiver (MRT) equipped with 10 meters of cable, a GNSS antenna with an additional 5 meters of cable, and two Nano transponders along with a command hub. The transponders are the latest second-generation models from Sonardyne, boasting enhanced battery longevity and depth ratings, making them particularly suitable for micro ROVs. Additionally, a connector-equipped Nano variant is available, allowing for continuous operation when connected to an external power source.
Speedy and Easy Setup
Users can quickly initiate operations by linking their laptop, which runs the Ranger 2 software, to the system via Wi-Fi. After placing the MRT in the water, connecting the antenna, and attaching a Nano to each target, even those new to the technology can expect to be operational in approximately 30 minutes, according to Sonardyne.
Advanced Integration for AUV Developers
For AUV developers interested in exploring new functionalities, such as swarm operations, a Micro-Ranger 2 integrator system kit is available. This kit includes Sonardyne’s Marine Robotics software pack and AvTrak 6 Nanos, which facilitate two-way communication, vehicle control, and tracking within a compact device.
Optimized for Offshore Wind Operations
The Micro-ranger 2 is particularly effective for shallow-water tasks in offshore wind projects, including seabed instrument placement and retrieval. Utilizing the same Wideband-2 signal technology and 6G hardware as the Ranger 2 series, it is also compatible with Sonardyne’s Release Transponder 6 (RT 6) range. This system is ideal for rapid deployment during underwater inspections with small ROVs.
Expert insights on the Micro-Ranger 2
John Houlder, the USBL product line manager at Sonardyne, stated: “Micro-Ranger 2 offers unparalleled flexibility,user-friendliness,and convenience. It stands out as a more compact, lightweight, and comprehensive portable system compared to any other option available. It is export-license exempt and designed for safe transport on passenger flights. Once on-site—whether at a quayside for ROV tracking, a RIB for diver monitoring, or a small vessel for AUV control—users simply power it on, connect to the control hub via their laptop, and begin operations.”
