The SPECTRE autopilot from Dynautics has been seamlessly integrated into a USV (unmanned surface vessel) created by CEE HydroSystems, addressing the growing need for a user-friendly and efficient platform for hydrographic surveys.

The CEE-USV features the innovative CEE-PILOT autonomous waypoint navigation system, which utilizes a SPECTRE control module equipped with refined algorithms. These algorithms process high-frequency GNSS and inertial data to ensure precise path adherence.

CEE HydroSystems has published a case study that underscores the advantages of employing an autonomous USV platform.This study includes findings from a lagoon survey, demonstrating the reliability and quality of the CEE-USV equipped with the SPECTRE autopilot.

Survey routes for the CEE-USV can be designed in the field using specialized software, which then transmits the waypoints to the SPECTRE autopilot via a telemetry link. Once the route is set, the USV can be activated in autonomous mode to commence surveying instantly.

The lagoon survey was conducted under mostly calm conditions, featuring light winds and minimal current. This surroundings enabled the USV to adhere to a 20-foot spaced line plan with remarkable accuracy. The average cross-track error recorded was less than 15 cm (6 inches), and even the end-of-line maneuvers were executed with minimal deviation from the designated survey path. The USV effectively countered drift caused by tidal movements, employing enhanced thrust and rudder adjustments to maintain its course, with a maximum drift recorded at just 1.4 m (4.5 ft).

The case study further illustrates that the use of equidistant survey lines and uniform coverage resulted in final bathymetric data free from artifacts that could arise from irregular coverage, a common issue in USV data collection. The consistency of the data is visually represented in a 3D model of the XYZ surface.
