Switzerland to Initiate Nationwide Drone Network for Emergency Services

Swisscom broadcast has partnered with nokia to establish a comprehensive Drones-as-a-service network throughout Switzerland, with plans to deploy 300 Nokia Drone-in-a-Box units.

This network will empower drones to conduct emergency response operations, perimeter security, and infrastructure assessments, thereby enhancing the safety of public service personnel.

The initiative aims to enable scalable and dependable Drone-as-a-Service operations across Switzerland, utilizing Nokia Drone Networks, a complete Drone-in-a-Box solution that includes:

  • The drone itself
  • A docking station
  • A ground control unit
  • A payload equipped with video and thermal imaging cameras
  • Associated software
  • Service components

This solution also features interfaces and APIs that facilitate seamless integration with third-party systems, including traffic monitoring, video management, dispatch solutions, and industrial inspection and monitoring systems.

Enhancing Infrastructure Inspections

The drone network is poised to substantially improve worker safety in Swiss industries by enabling inspections of tall or difficult-to-access structures, thus eliminating the need for personnel to navigate hazardous environments.

As part of the Nokia MXIE platform architecture, Nokia drone Networks allow for the straightforward integration of additional applications tailored to industrial clients with edge computing requirements, such as generating 3D maps or asset detection.

Revolutionizing Emergency Response

The drones will optimize resource allocation and potentially save lives during emergencies. Operated remotely, they will collect critical data within minutes of an incident, enhancing situational awareness for first responders.

Public safety organizations in Switzerland will have the ability to access the nationwide drone network by simply requesting a drone flight, akin to a ride-sharing service, through Swisscom Broadcast.

They will also benefit from a comprehensive service portfolio that includes expertise, compliance, and data collection and analysis provided by Nokia and Swisscom Broadcast.

the deployment is anticipated to cover all regions of Switzerland. Nokia and Swisscom will continue to collaborate with relevant regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with regulations, particularly concerning spectrum and aviation safety.

This initiative marks the second nationwide deployment of Nokia Drone Networks, following the Citymesh project in belgium, and will bolster Switzerland’s public safety and Industry 4.0 initiatives.

The project underscores Nokia’s capabilities in modernizing digital infrastructure and leveraging mission-critical industrial edge computing (MXIE) with the support of 3GPP technologies for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) autonomous operations.

The partnership with Swisscom Broadcast will also facilitate the growth of industrial applications, automation, BVLOS operations, and the expansion of 3GPP technologies for drone applications in switzerland.

Dominik Müller, CEO of Swisscom Broadcast, stated, “we are excited to partner with Nokia for this vital infrastructure project in Switzerland. Together, we can accelerate the launch of our Drones-as-a-Service offerings for our industrial and public safety clients.”

“The combination of our existing People Density Tool and our expertise in drone operations with Nokia’s robust hardware and an open, future-ready software architecture is crucial for supporting such large-scale initiatives.”

Raghav Sahgal, President of Cloud and Network Services at Nokia, remarked, “We are honored to collaborate with Swisscom Broadcast, a true pioneer in Drones-as-a-Service operations, on this significant project to create a nationwide Drone-as-a-Service network in Switzerland.”

“The nokia Drone Networks solution is designed for large-scale projects, incorporating our mission-critical industrial edge (MXIE) technology to enhance its advanced computing capabilities and software. This will undoubtedly provide Swiss businesses with access to an exceptional Drones-as-a-Service offering, improving both worker and public safety.”
