Advancements in AI and Computer Vision for the Teal 2 Drone
Red Cat Holdings,a leader in military technology focused on integrating robotic systems to enhance the capabilities of armed forces, has successfully completed the second phase of its collaboration with Athena AI,specializing in artificial intelligence and computer vision.
Enhancing Battlefield Decision-Making
Initially announced as a collaborator for Red Cat’s Teal 2 military-grade drone in March 2023, Athena AI has now utilized video footage captured by the Teal 2’s thermal imaging sensor during a nighttime operational test. This advancement has enabled effective target identification and tracking in combat scenarios. The partnership aims to empower military commanders with rapid decision-making capabilities, bolstered by AI technology.
Advanced Object Recognition Technology
Athena AI has granted Red Cat access to its proprietary computer vision framework, which facilitates rapid object tracking and detailed data analysis at varying speeds. This innovative solution can detect various targets, including weapons and personnel, even in low-light conditions, as well as Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) markers like Cyalume HALOs and infrared beacons.
Teal 2: A Cutting-Edge Unmanned Aerial System
The Teal 2 is specifically engineered for nighttime missions and stands out as the first small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS) equipped with Teledyne FLIR’s advanced Hadron 640R sensor. This technology provides users with unparalleled thermal imaging resolution in a compact design. additionally, it incorporates the latest Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, delivering critical information that enables operators to make informed decisions swiftly.
Open Platform Design for Enhanced Functionality
The airframe of the Teal 2 is designed as an open platform, allowing for the integration of software enhancements like those from Athena AI. This synergy not only improves operational efficiency but also contributes positively to Red Cat’s profit margins.

Strategic Advantages for Warfighters
“The nighttime computer vision capabilities we offer for the Teal 2 are essential for users requiring high-value data during dark hours,” stated George Matus, founder and CEO of Red Cat’s subsidiary, Teal Drones. “The insights and imagery provided by Athena’s technology are exceptional. The combination of Athena’s battle-tracking features and AI with Teal’s top-tier drone equips warfighters with a meaningful advantage.”
“In contrast to many other drones in the sUAS market that lack compliance with the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (MISB), the Teal 2’s KLV metadata fully leverages Athena AI’s decision-making support,” explained Stephen Bornstein, CEO of Athena. “This integration of a nighttime sUAS with live vehicle metadata enhances real-time situational awareness, facilitating effective battle tracking and accurate targeting at higher command levels.”
