Teal Drones, a subsidiary of red Cat Holdings, has successfully obtained an additional $1.2 million to further advance the progress of a new small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) prototype for the U.S. Army’s Short Range Reconnaissance (SRR) initiative.
Initially awarded a prototype contract for the SRR Tranche 2 program in March 2022, the Army has now committed a total of $2.7 million to support Teal’s involvement. Teal is among only three companies competing in this final phase of the SRR program.
Following a series of testing and demonstration benchmarks, the selected vendor(s) will be tasked with producing a rucksack-portable sUAS. This system aims to equip Army platoons, consisting of 20 to 50 soldiers, with a swiftly deployable surveillance and reconnaissance tool to enhance situational awareness beyond immediate terrain features.
The newly allocated funding introduces additional requirements, initially designated for Tranche 3, that the sUAS prototypes must fulfill.
“Securing a future SRR production contract represents a notable chance for any selected company, and Teal is eager to provide the best solutions for our warfighters,” stated george Matus,Founder and CEO of Teal. “I am confident that the SRR prototype we are developing will not only meet but exceed the Army’s expectations.”
“Uncrewed systems are a transformative technology that grant soldiers a significant advantage on the battlefield,” remarked Maj. Josh McMillion, U.S. Army SRR APM. “The SRR initiative is the Army’s strategy to deliver this capability promptly, ensuring our soldiers maintain a technological edge over adversaries in any operational context, thus avoiding a fair fight.”
The prototype being developed by Teal will incorporate advanced technology similar to that found in its recently launched military-grade sUAS, the Teal 2, which debuted in April. The Teal 2 is engineered to “Dominate the Night,” featuring state-of-the-art intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities that provide timely information, enabling operators to make quicker and more informed decisions.
Teal’s technology collaborators for the SRR project include Teledyne FLIR, Doodle Labs, and Immervision.
