Triad RF Discusses the Rise of Satellite-Based 5G/NB-IoT Networks

Triad RF Systems showcases its TTRM2020-D03 S-Band RF Subsystem, enabling next-generation global IoT connectivity through satellite 5G and NB-IoT networks

Triad RF Discusses the Rise of Satellite-Based 5G/NB-IoT Networks

Triad RF Systems, a leader in RF amplifiers and radio front ends, has developed solutions specifically designed for the challenges of non-terrestrial communication networks. Their products have accumulated over 20 years of combined operational flight heritage in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

The Internet of Things (IoT) market is experiencing rapid growth. As traditional internet infrastructure struggles to keep pace, satellite-based Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) services utilizing 5G are emerging as a solution for global connectivity.

Recent industry developments include 3GPP’s Release 17 with new standards for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) in IoT applications and growing momentum for 5G satellite connectivity among telecom and satellite service providers.

Key benefits of LEO satellites for 5G NB-IoT include:

  • Low Latency: One-way latency of around 30 ms or less
  • Flexible Global Coverage: Full Earth orbit every 90-120 minutes
  • Low Cost: Significantly cheaper than GEO satellites
  • Low Power Requirements: Ideal for IoT devices with small data packages

The TTRM2020-D03 S-Band RF Subsystem by Triad RF is currently in service on CubeSats operating in LEO. Each TTRM2020-D03 unit contains a fully integrated PA, LNA and dual filter assembly. The unit is designed to deliver exceptional performance in terms of high power, efficiency, and out-of-band rejection, aligning with 5G 3GPP specifications to support NTN MNOs in achieving compliance.

Key features of the TTRM2020-D03:

  • Integrated Dual PA / LNA Cavity Passband Filter
  • I2C Temperature Monitoring
  • Independent PA / LNA Enable Control
  • Temperature cycle tested from -30 to + 65 °C
  • Shock tested to ECSS-E-ST-10-03C Standard

Applications include 5G / Narrowband IoT Networks and Cubesat / Smallsat Systems.

Triad RF Systems will be showcasing their solutions at the Smallsat show in Logan, Utah, from August 3-9, offering attendees the opportunity to learn more about their innovative RF subsystems for satellite-based IoT networks.
