Enhancing C-Band Frequency Management for UAS Operations
uAvionix is set to elevate C-Band frequency management for uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) command and control (C2) communications to a regional scale, accommodating multiple UAS operating in close proximity.
Innovative Partnership with FAA
In collaboration with the Federal Aviation Management (FAA) through a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA), uAvionix will showcase a Dynamic Frequency Management System (DFMS). This system serves as a national submission for managing C-Band frequencies, aligning with regulatory policies while promoting the development of C2 Communications Service Provider (C2CSP) infrastructure.
Dynamic Frequency Assignment
Utilizing the skyline Platform, the demonstration will illustrate how organizations can dynamically allocate available frequencies within the protected C-Band spectrum for multiple UAS operating in close quarters. These frequency assignments will be carefully coordinated and time-phased, ensuring uninterrupted and dependable C2 communications throughout each flight.
Current Challenges in UAS Frequency Management
uAvionix has previously demonstrated a DFMS for UAS C2 utilizing the protected C-Band spectrum. They emphasize that the use of licensed aeronautical spectrum, such as C-Band, for UAS C2 is currently an exception, necessitating approvals from both the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and FAA. Due to these stringent requirements, many UAS operations rely on unlicensed spectrum, notably in the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band, where interference can significantly hinder C2 interaction performance and reliability.
Regulatory Developments and Spectrum Allocation
The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 mandated the FAA and FCC to assess various spectrum allocations for UAS C2, leading to support for the use of 5030 to 5091 MHz as licensed and protected C-Band spectrum. Effective management of this limited band is crucial to ensure consistent and reliable allocation among multiple UAS operating in the same area.
Progress in UAS Commercialization
uAvionix reports substantial advancements in the commercialization of UAS operations and their integration into the National Airspace System, highlighted by recent collaborations with the FAA and the awarded BAA for extending Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations in challenging environments. This partnership brings BVLOS operations closer to becoming a routine aspect of the UAS industry, enhancing safety and efficiency.
Expert Insights on UAS Communication Reliability
Cyriel Kronenburg from uAvionix remarked, “As we anticipate the deployment of hundreds, if not thousands, of drones for various applications—from medical deliveries to consumer services—it is essential that communication links with each aircraft remain reliable and free from performance issues caused by interference or congestion.”
“While unlicensed spectrum is prone to high levels of interference, licensed spectrum offers a solution. However, its limited availability means we currently manage its use through a lengthy manual process, which is not scalable.”
