Underwater ROVs Advance Marine Monitoring for Fisheries

Discover how A-Tlegay Fisheries Society uses Deep Trekker ROVs to improve underwater data collection, reduce costs, and enhance marine ecosystem monitoring

Underwater ROVs Advance Marine Monitoring for Fisheries

The A-Tlegay Fisheries Society, representing five Indigenous Nations in British Columbia, has significantly enhanced its environmental monitoring efforts by integrating Deep Trekker’s Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) into its research operations. Find out more > >

Founded in 1999, the Society is dedicated to protecting marine ecosystems and supporting the fishing rights of its member Nations. The adoption of advanced underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles has helped streamline data collection, reduce operational costs, and increase the consistency and accuracy of environmental assessments.

A-Tlegay uses the Deep Trekker DTG3 ROV primarily to capture high-resolution underwater video and images for studies such as sediment assessments and habitat evaluations. With real-time data transmission and intuitive controls, the ROV provides immediate feedback to researchers, improving decision-making and enabling faster responses to environmental changes. The unit’s compact design and maneuverability also allow for rapid deployment without the need for formal training.

ROV deployment frequency, typically four times per month, has enabled researchers to capture seasonal variations, detect short-term environmental impacts, and build reliable long-term datasets. This level of consistency reduces the risk of data being skewed by anomalies and supports a more accurate understanding of marine ecosystems. Compared to traditional methods such as drop cameras and dive teams, ROVs offer superior image quality, greater precision, and far fewer logistical challenges.

The use of ROVs has also led to significant cost savings. By reducing the need for divers, A-Tlegay minimizes the risks and expenses associated with manual inspections in challenging underwater environments. In situations where divers are unavailable, the ROV ensures continuity of data collection, keeping projects on track.

A-Tlegay reports minimal maintenance requirements for its Deep Trekker units. Some models observed during joint operations with Fisheries and Oceans Canada have remained in service for over a decade, underscoring the durability and reliability of the platform. Operators have also praised Deep Trekker’s responsive customer support, which contributes to sustained operational efficiency in the field.

By leveraging underwater ROV technology, A-Tlegay Fisheries Society is advancing its mission of marine stewardship, improving data quality, and supporting more informed conservation and resource management strategies across its traditional territories.
