Unlocking New Heights: Collaborative Efforts in UAS-Based Airborne LiDAR Scanning

The RIEGL VQ-840-G has been integrated on the Schiebel CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS to create an efficient and secure system for surveying shallow waters, where monitoring from boats becomes a challenge

RIEGL has successfully incorporated its VQ-840-G topo-bathymetric LiDAR sensor into the Schiebel CAMCOPTER S-100 Unmanned Aerial System (UAS).

As stated by both companies, deploying a refined laser scanning system remotely via a UAS necessitates a customized approach that surpasses standard off-the-shelf solutions. To ensure the UAS maintains its extensive operational range, it is indeed essential to minimize the weight of the sensor payload.Furthermore, effective survey execution demands comprehensive remote control of the payload instruments, along with real-time feedback to the operator through a reliable data link.

RIEGL’s compact topo-bathymetric laser scanner is engineered for diverse maritime and hydrographic applications. The LiDAR sensor payload system is remotely managed through a data link, which is vital for its integration into the S-100 platform.

The scanner operates using the onboard ‘RiACQUIRE-Embedded’ software via the established data link, allowing for data acquisition and laser safety monitoring. Upon completion of the survey, the raw data is effortlessly incorporated into RIEGL’s data processing workflow.

The combination of the RIEGL VQ-840-G and the exceptional technical capabilities of the CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS provides an effective and secure method for surveying shallow waters, where conventional boat monitoring can be problematic. Applications of Airborne LiDAR Bathymetry (ALB) encompass the mapping of coastlines and riverbanks, and also the assessment of natural habitats, water reservoirs, and hydraulic engineering projects such as canals, dams, and bridges. A single data acquisition mission captures information both below and above the water surface.

Moreover, the topographic laser scanners RIEGL VUX-1UAV/-LR and VUX-12023 can also be fitted into the front payload bay of the CAMCOPTER S-100.
