SBG Systems has successfully integrated its Ellipse-D GNSS-aided Inertial Navigation System (INS) with Cobham’s Aviator UAV 200 terminal, marking a meaningful advancement in drone dialog technology.

The Importance of SATCOM in Modern Drone Operations

As contemporary drones are increasingly capable of operating beyond traditional radio ranges,often covering distances of several hundred kilometers,the need for reliable communication becomes paramount. The aviator UAV 200 SATCOM terminal plays a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted communication, especially when ground-based infrastructure fails to maintain a consistent VHF link with the UAV.

Technical Specifications of the Ellipse-D

The Ellipse-D features a dual-antenna design that enhances its GNSS-aided INS capabilities, supplying the necessary inertial data for the SATCOM terminal’s self-pointing phased array antenna. This system is equipped with an advanced inertial measurement unit (IMU) that delivers precise roll, pitch, position, and heading information. The dual antennas are specifically designed to mitigate the effects of magnetic interference, ensuring data integrity.

Real-World Testing and Results

To evaluate the performance of the integrated systems, a series of tests were conducted by mounting the units on the roof of a truck. During these tests,the INS outputs were transmitted in real-time to both a PC and the SATCOM terminal. The results demonstrated that as the truck moved, accelerated, or altered its course, the antenna beam consistently tracked the satellite, maintaining a stable communication link throughout.
