Textron Systems Advances U.S. Navy’s Unmanned Influence Sweep System

Textron Systems has recently revealed that the U.S. Navy’s Unmanned Influence Sweep System (UISS) Program, which utilizes the company’s Common Unmanned Surface Vehicle (CUSV), has successfully reached a significant Milestone C decision. This achievement paves the way for the program to commence low-rate initial production (LRIP), with plans for the Navy to contract Textron Systems for the production of three UISS units under the current agreement.

Innovative Solutions for Maritime Challenges

The UISS initiative marks the U.S. Navy’s inaugural unmanned surface vehicle (USV) program of record, aimed at enhancing the Navy’s capabilities in mine countermeasures within complex maritime settings. This program leverages interchangeable payloads and sophisticated sensors to address various operational challenges. The CUSV, the foundation of this program, is a versatile USV capable of accommodating multiple payloads, including side-scan sonar, mine neutralization tools, non-lethal weaponry, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems.

Significant Milestone Achieved

Following the completion of Navy developmental testing and operational evaluations, the UISS has become the first program in the Navy’s USV portfolio to achieve this milestone. It is an integral component of a broader Mine Counter Measure Unmanned Surface Vehicle (MCM USV) strategy, designed for deployment from Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) and other suitable vessels.

Commitment to Excellence

Wayne Prender, Senior Vice President of Applied Technologies & Advanced Programs at Textron Systems, stated, “The collaboration between Textron and the U.S.Navy has been instrumental in reaching this Milestone C decision. We appreciate the extensive time spent on the water and the commitment of the testing teams that have enabled us to progress to this phase of the program.”

Production and Future Prospects

As the primary contractor and system integrator for both the UISS and MCM USV programs, Textron Systems will carry out production at its facilities located in Hunt Valley, Maryland, and New Orleans. This initiative not only signifies a leap forward in unmanned maritime technology but also underscores Textron’s commitment to supporting the U.S. Navy’s operational readiness and effectiveness.
