Revolutionizing Precision Targeting: Octopus ISR Systems Unveils Geo-Lock Technology
Octopus ISR Systems, a branch of UAV factory Ltd., has introduced an innovative feature called Precision Geo-lock for its epsilon series of compact gyro-stabilized gimbals. This cutting-edge capability integrates a refined GPS-aided inertial navigation system (GPS/INS) with advanced software algorithms and user-amiable payload operator software. Precision Geo-Lock empowers users with precise target geo-location, range measurements, and a dynamic moving map interface.
Challenges in Miniature Gimbal Technology
Implementing precision geo-location in a compact airborne gimbal involves several complexities. These gimbals operate in environments characterized by significant vibrations, high accelerations, and extreme temperature variations. additionally, the constraints of size and power consumption are critical for miniature gyro-stabilized gimbals, which are frequently deployed in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Addressing Limitations of Traditional Systems
“Historically, small gyro-stabilized gimbals relied on external heading sources to determine target geo-location,” explained Konstantins Popiks, CEO of UAV Factory. “Typically, the attitude data is provided by an autopilot onboard the UAV, but the accuracy is often compromised due to the low-cost sensors commonly used in miniature autopilots. These systems do not require the precise heading data essential for the gimbal, leading to significant geo-location inaccuracies that are of little use to UAV operators. Moreover, misalignment between the gimbal and autopilot, as they are mounted separately on soft vibration mounts, introduces additional errors.”
Integrating Advanced GPS/INS for Enhanced Accuracy
To facilitate the Geo-Lock feature, an external GPS/INS system was necessary, one that could deliver exceptional accuracy. “Modern miniature gyro-stabilized gimbals have a narrow field of view of less than 1.3 degrees; thus, the pointing accuracy must exceed 1.3 degrees to ensure the target remains within the video frame,” Popiks noted. To ensure the accomplished deployment of the Precision Geo-Lock feature, UAV Factory collaborated with VectorNav Technologies.
VectorNav’s VN-200 GPS-INS
VectorNav: A Key Partner in Precision Navigation
VectorNav specializes in high-performance inertial navigation systems, utilizing the latest MEMS sensor and GPS/GNSS technologies. “The VN-200 from VectorNav was the only product available that combined high performance with a compact form factor suitable for direct integration into the gimbal’s optical bench,” Popiks stated. “Its ability to maintain accuracy despite the challenging conditions of high vibrations, accelerations, and temperature changes made it the clear choice.”
Unmatched Accuracy and Versatility
UAV Factory’s Precision Geo-Lock achieves an impressive accuracy of better than 0.3 degrees and features a ‘Plug-and-play’ design, allowing customers to install the Epsilon gimbal and obtain precise results across various platforms, even in high-vibration settings. The Epsilon gyro-stabilized turrets will be available with both the VN-200 single GPS-based INS solution and the VN-300 dual GPS-based INS.The single GPS/INS solution is ideal for dynamic platforms like manned and unmanned aircraft, while the dual GPS/INS is essential for low-dynamic platforms such as aerostats, ships, and helicopters.
