Volz Servos to Equip Thales UAS100 with Certified Actuators
In a significant advancement for the first EASA-certified Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), Volz Servos has been selected to provide certified actuators for Thales’s UAS100 long-range drone.
Collaboration Between Volz and Thales
The partnership between Volz and Thales includes a contract that also involves Volz’s subsidiary, Aircraft Electronic Engineering GmbH (AEE). This association is recognized by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for production, maintenance, and option design, and will ensure that the actuators meet both EASA and Federal Aviation Management (FAA) standards.
Capabilities of the UAS100
The thales UAS100 is designed for both civil and governmental applications, boasting operational ranges exceeding 100 kilometers.
High Standards for Actuation
With Volz Servos, operators of the UAS100 can expect actuators that adhere to the highest safety and reliability standards. The system will feature ten actuators across various control surfaces and one for throttle control, all based on the established DA 22 BLDC model. These actuators will undergo a comprehensive redevelopment process to comply with EASA regulations concerning electronics (DO 254), mechanics, and software (DO 178C), achieving a Design Assurance Level (DAL) of B.
Statements from leadership
“We are incredibly honored that Thales has chosen Volz to develop the first certified actuators for a UAS,” stated Phillipp Volz, CEO of Volz Servos. “The prototypes have already demonstrated triumphant performance with standard Volz actuators during all test flights. We are eager to collaborate with Thales to bring the UAS100 to fruition.”
