Wavefront Systems has introduced its innovative mobile underwater security solution, featuring the Sentinel IDS® (intruder Detection Sonar). This system is housed within a rugged, self-sufficient Expeditionary Trailer, enabling swift and efficient underwater surveillance in various environments.
The Sentinel IDS® Expeditionary Trailer is engineered to protect diverse assets from a waterside perspective, whether in oceans, lakes, rivers, or reservoirs. These assets encompass extensive commercial ports, vital national infrastructure, remote naval installations, and private properties.
Constructed on a proven military-grade platform recognized for its durability and dependability in challenging conditions, the trailer’s self-sufficient design allows teams to quickly establish an underwater threat detection perimeter in remote areas lacking local infrastructure. The Sentinel IDS® Expeditionary Trailer meets the growing global need for effective and easily deployable security solutions.
Understanding Sentinel IDS
Sentinel is among the most extensively utilized IDS systems, crafted to shield vessels and facilities from underwater threats. These threats can include attacks from uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) and divers attempting unauthorized access while potentially hiding explosives or illegal items.

Utilizing a blend of simultaneous active and passive sonar technologies, Sentinel monitors underwater environments, detecting, classifying, and tracking potential threats at distances of up to 1,500 meters for drones and 1,000 meters for divers, contingent on local conditions.
Its patented software algorithms effectively filter out various marine elements, such as debris, fish, and marine mammals, substantially minimizing false alarms and allowing security personnel to concentrate on genuine threats.
Features of the Sentinel Expeditionary Trailer
The introduction of the sentinel Expeditionary Trailer signifies a major leap in mobile site security, providing users with a complete solution that can be towed to a site, set up, and commence underwater monitoring in as little as 20 minutes.
this trailer is outfitted with onboard batteries, a generator, climate control (for both cooling and heating), a wireless mesh network, and sentinel command-and-control processing, storage, and wiring. It equips a small team with all necesary resources to operate independently in remote and challenging environments for extended durations, irrespective of temperature conditions.
Understanding that large areas often necessitate extensive coverage,Sentinel IDS is frequently deployed in networked configurations with multiple sonar heads positioned on the seafloor. The Expeditionary Trailer seamlessly accommodates this capability with a telescopic communications mast, allowing up to 10 trailers to connect in a mesh network.
Once interconnected, any trailer can function as the master controller, displaying all sentinel data or securely linking back to a central command-and-control hub. The mast also supports additional hardware options, including high-resolution cameras, floodlights, and loudspeakers, creating a comprehensive, multi-layered security framework.
The trailer can be operated in three distinct modes:
- Attended mode – operated by a person using the onboard monitor and keyboard.
- Local mode – Utilizes a rugged laptop and 100m cable for convenience or covert operations.
- Unattended mode – After initial setup, the trailer operates autonomously, wirelessly communicating with other trailers or a dedicated command center.
Simon Goldsworthy, Global Business Progress Manager at Wavefront, stated, “The capability to swiftly deploy a robust and scalable underwater surveillance system to safeguard ports, energy infrastructure, and industrial sites is crucial in today’s heightened security landscape. The Expeditionary Trailer delivers that capability, providing superior, ‘go-anywhere’ and uninterrupted protection. It exemplifies Wavefront’s commitment to addressing customer needs with relevant, world-class products.”
Justin Hains from Forcys, Wavefront’s defense sales partner, added, “for defense applications, the mobility and rapid deployment features of this system will meet the urgent operational demands we’re observing in the sector. The Expeditionary Trailer is an remarkable offering; Sentinel stands out in performance and reliability, now available in a package that can be dispatched anywhere to protect anything—from a carrier strike group visiting an overseas port to securing a temporary operating base in contested regions.”
