Sentinel uses a new patented Simultaneous In-band Passive and Active Sonar (SInAPS) capability to enhance its detection and tracking capability, particularly against small unmanned underwater platforms

Sentinel 2 Sonar System Unveiled at NAVDEX 2023

Wavefront Systems is showcasing its innovative Sentinel 2 Intruder Detection Sonar (IDS) for the first time in the Middle East at NAVDEX 2023, located at the Forcys booth (A-029) from Febuary 20 to 24.

Advanced Threat Detection Capabilities

The Sentinel system is designed to autonomously identify, monitor, and categorize underwater threats, including divers, Swimmer Delivery Vehicles (SDVs), and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that may pose risks to secured areas or assets.

Innovative SInAPS Technology

Utilizing a groundbreaking patented technology known as Simultaneous In-band Passive and Active Sonar (SInAPS), Sentinel enhances its ability to detect and track, especially against smaller unmanned underwater vehicles.

Addressing Underwater Security Gaps

Wavefront asserts that the increasing demand for improved situational awareness in underwater environments has positioned Sentinel as one of the most extensively utilized intruder detection systems globally. It is currently safeguarding vital national infrastructure, ports, harbors, and military operations.

Dual Detection Methodology

The SInAPS mode uniquely integrates the detection of target reflections from sonar emissions with passive tracking of a target’s own unintended acoustic signals. This dual approach effectively addresses the challenges posed by noisy environments typical of military ports, and also the limitations of active sonar when dealing with low-strength targets or slow-moving objects in cluttered seabed conditions.

Proven Effectiveness Through Rigorous Testing

In recent years, the SInAPS feature of the Sentinel 2 has undergone extensive testing and validation by both Wavefront Systems and its early users. The system has demonstrated remarkable success in maintaining passive tracking of targets that have occasionally eluded active tracking methods.
