Extreme Engineering Solutions, Inc. (X-ES) has unveiled the XChange3100, a versatile 6U OpenVPX™ switch module designed for both conduction and air cooling. This advanced module can accommodate a variety of configurations, featuring up to twenty-two 10 gigabit Ethernet ports, twelve 10/100/1000BASE-T ethernet ports, and eighty-eight 1000BASE-X Ethernet ports.
Advanced Switching Capabilities with integrated Broadcom Technology
XChange3100 6U OpenVPX™ 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch module
Engineered specifically for the demands of next-generation 6U systems, the XChange3100 incorporates three Broadcom® BCM56450 Ethernet switches. Each switch offers an impressive 102.5 Gb/s of non-blocking switching capability, an ARM A9-based CPU, and a complex traffic management system that simplifies board design and minimizes power consumption—all integrated into a single 40 nm chip.
One of the Broadcom® switches is dedicated to the control plane, while the other two handle data plane switching. This architecture enables the XChange3100 to maintain self-reliant control and dual data plane switching, ideal for applications requiring network isolation for enhanced security or performance. Additionally, the three switches can be interconnected to facilitate interaction between the control and data planes.
With a robust array of interfaces—including up to twenty-two XAUI 10 Gigabit ethernet ports, two 10GBASE-T ports, twelve 10/100/1000BASE-T ports, and eighty-eight 1000BASE-X SerDes Gigabit Ethernet ports—the XChange3100 is well-equipped to manage some of the largest 6U VPX backplanes. Two rugged 10GBASE-SR Ethernet ports provide direct front panel access to the switch data plane, allowing for on-card optical links without the need for external conversion.
Adherence to Industry Standards and Versatile Configurations
The XChange3100 represents the second generation of X-ES’s Katana switch series, which also includes the XChange3018 and XChange3013 3U VPX switches. All models in this series feature Managed Layer 2 Switching and optional Layer 3 Routing Management capabilities.
Designed to comply with various VITA 65 OpenVPX™ switch slot profiles, the XChange3100 integrates seamlessly into existing backplane architectures. It can also be equipped with VITA 48.2 Type 1 Two-Level maintenance (2LM) REDI support as an option.
Offering a wide range of configuration choices tailored to specific project needs, the XChange3100 includes extensive support for IEEE protocols and IETF RFCs,VICTORY Infrastructure Switch compatibility, advanced cable open/short detection, and both IPv4 and IPv6 support, all while adhering to the Ruggedized Enhanced Design Implementation (REDI) standards per VITA 48.
Expandable Features with Supported modules
The XChange3100 can be enhanced with the XPedite5205 XMC/PMC Embedded Services Router (ESR), which adds the robust features and security of Cisco IOS® software to the already extensive capabilities of the XChange3100.
Additionally, the XChange3100 supports IEEE1588v2 clear clocking and can be paired with the XPort3200 XMC/PMC Grandmaster Clock module, ensuring precise synchronization across all devices connected to the switch.
