X-ES Unveils Cutting-Edge VME SBCs Powered by Xilinx Artix-7 FPGAs!

The XCalibur1931 6U VME Module

Extreme Engineering Solutions, Inc. (X-ES) has unveiled a series of new 6U VME Single Board Computers (SBCs) that incorporate a VME Bridge based on the Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA. These innovative 6U VME solutions are designed to be pin-compatible with the Radstone/GE/Abaco PPC7D VME IDT Tsi148 card, offering users a seamless upgrade path for legacy systems and addressing the challenges posed by End-of-Life (EOL) VME products that relied on the now-defunct Tsi148 VME Bridge.

By opting for an FPGA-based VME solution, X-ES enhances the performance capabilities of its flagship SBCs. The Xilinx Artix-7 VME Bridge not only surpasses the capabilities of the Tsi148 VME Bridge but also features a x4 PCI Express 2.0 interface to the host and supports an external DDR3 SDRAM DMA buffer, providing a wealth of advanced functionalities.

With a design that allows for firmware upgrades and future portability of intellectual property to new chips, X-ES VME boards present system integrators with a VME Bridge solution that is free from components with lifecycle limitations, all within a more compact chip package than previously available.

XCalibur1931 & XCalibur1930 NXP 6U VME SBCs
The XCalibur1931 and XCalibur1930 are equipped with the NXP T2080 QorIQ communications processor and the Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA-based VME Bridge. These models are specifically designed to counter the EOL of the IDT/Tundra Tsi148, with the FPGA-based VME bridge ensuring longevity and reliability.

The XCalibur1931 features a pinout compatible with Radstone/GE/Abaco PPC7D and is powered by the NXP QorIQ T2080 processor, offering up to 8 GB of DRAM, 32 GB of NAND flash, and two XMC/PMC sites, delivering a substantial performance enhancement over the PowerPC 7447.

Meanwhile, the XCalibur1930 represents the latest addition to X-ES’s PowerPC VME SBC lineup, crafted to provide existing customers with a viable upgrade option from previous VME products.

Both the XCalibur1931 and XCalibur1930 utilize the same Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA-based VME bridge, wich accommodates all VME transfer modes from VME32 to 2eSST320, ensuring compatibility and performance improvements.

XCalibur4531 Intel® 6U VME SBC
The XCalibur4531 is a 6U VME SBC powered by a 5th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor, featuring a VME bridging solution based on the Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA. This FPGA-based VME bridge effectively addresses obsolescence issues that are common in aging VME systems.

Supporting VME32, VME64x, and 2eSST operations, the XCalibur4531 integrates seamlessly into existing VME systems, making it an ideal choice for enhancing processing performance in various applications.

With support for up to 16 GB of ECC SDRAM, 64 GB of onboard SSD storage, and two XMC or PMC modules, the XCalibur4531 is available in both air- and conduction-cooled configurations, featuring standard I/O interfaces such as serial, video, USB, Ethernet, and SATA.

The XChange4003 6U VME Carrier

The XChange4003 serves as a VME64x carrier card that enables the connection of XMC/PMC modules to the VMEBus, utilizing a VME bridging solution based on the Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA. This FPGA-based approach guarantees extended production life and high-performance operation.

Supporting all versions of the VMEBus protocol, from the original VME32 to VME64x and 2eVME/2eSST operations, the XChange4003 is an effective solution for interfacing any XMC/PMC module with any system’s VMEBus backplane.

Additionally, the XChange4003 accommodates both smart (monarch PrPMC/Root Complex PrXMC) and non-intelligent (PMC/endpoint XMC) boards, and can function in either a SYSCON or non-SYSCON VMEBus slot.
